If you have a telephone with a dial tone that connects back to the local central office business phone systems, and you actually really do, the wire that goes from your telephone, if you trace it, it actually really does trace a mile or two or three miles away, all the way back to the central office.
The final thing to understand when you're talking about the PSTN, the public switch telephone network, and you're talking about central offices, is of course whenever you're dealing with technology, you're always dealing with authority, who has control over what. So if you have the central office that's here and you have your house that's right here, when you make telephone calls the central office, or your telephone company, is responsible for everything that happens on the PSTN, the public switch telephone number.
They have no responsibility for what goes on inside your building. So this whole cloud of the PSTN they're responsible for, your building they're not responsible for.
